Viking Heart is a motor sailor and requires a very economical rpopulsion system to assist to the sails. She has just the system.

The propulsion system is diesel hydraulic. An axial piston pump is directly attached to the engine. The pump moves oil at a rate of 0 to 2.5 cubic inches per revolution in both forward and reverse. There is no torque on the engine, thereby giving the ability to use very soft motor mounts to reduce vibration to almost nothing. A 5.0 cubic inch displacement hydraulic motor is coupled directly to the prop shaft. The thrust is delivered directly to hull by way of a very large thrust bearing rated for 250 hp.

The use of the variable displacement pump and motor together gives the effect of a varable pitch prop on the fly controlled in the pillot house. The prop is slightly oversize, a 23×15. This allowos for slower rpm and maximum thrust. Full forward at 800 engine rpm uses 1/2 gallon per hour with both alternators working. You arrive in the anchorage with fully charged batteries and 12 gallons of hot water for a shower before happy hour.

The shaft seal is dripless and requires no maintenance.

The engine itself is a British made Dorchester Ford four cylinder, designed for powering an irrigation pump or electrical generator. The bearings are oversize to provide extreme long life. The only salt water the engine sees is beyond the exhaust elbow for exhaust cooling.

Engine cooling is all anticorrosion treated fresh water which passes through a very adequate size keel cooler.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The heart of the DC electrical system is two separate battery banks rated at 825 amp hours each. They are each charged separately by their own 200 amp alternator. The alternators are mounted on the engine 180 degrees apart thereby placing no side load on the crankshaft. The alternators are turned on or off at will from the console in the pilot house. They are controlled by programmable external regulators.

In additiion, for charging, are two kyocera 750 watts solar panel producing 22 amps continuosly in bright sun. When at anchor with fully charged batteries it is not necessary to think about charging for up tofive days. This is with fridge and freezer operating.

When at the dock the 3000 watt inverter/charger does the trick.

Viking Heart has no noisy generator. Never has had one and never will need one even though there is room for one in the engine room.

AC ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

In adition to shore power Viking Heart has a 3000 watts inverter, The inverter can be remotely turned on and off at the navigation station. The boat is wired with outlets everywhere. All of the wire is “anchor” tinned copper.

The prime safety factor is 60,000 pounds. In heavy seas you are not being knocked around. The full foam cored hull has 3/8 inch glass inside and outside. There a five bulkheads for hull support. If for any reason you would lose power coming to anchor this boat will coast a quater mile.

The lifelines on deck are 41 inches tall. You will not go over them easily.

All sheets and control line are brought into the pilot house. The only reason to go on deck is to reef the main.

All house windows are double glazed laminated safety glass. It might crack but will not blow out.

Viking Heart comes with a sic person life raft, ahard bottom inflatable dingy, an EPIRB, the most complete first aid kit you have ever seen. The best for last is the swim platform with a ladder allowing you get back on board if you should go swimming accidently.

Additional Information

NAVIGATION

All of the navigation revolves around the Raymarine C80 chart plotter. Located in the overhead console it is out of the way but is very easy to access. The C-80 is standar chart plotter displaying chart, depth, and radar. Also overhead is the bullet proof W-H auto pilot and wind speed and direction. The auto pilot operates off of a fluxgate compass located in a hanging locker in the aft stateroom.

The steering in hydraulic through a Wagner pump. The auto pilot is hydraulic also and is plumbed directly into the rams operating the rudder. The rudder is skeg mountend for strength. It is offset slightly from tha shaft for ease of removal of the prop shaft.

The boat comes with a full set of cruising guides, Mexico to Panama. The present owner singlehanded most of the route from San Carlos, Sonora MX. to Panama and back to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, MX.
